8 injured in Austin nightclub shooting

Police said the two men wanted for open firing at a crowd outside at a nightclub in Downtown Austin, wounding eight people, have turned themselves in.

Police said 25-year-old Brandon Bruce Hutchison, also known as “Big Hutch” and 21-year-old LaBaaron Demon Hutchison, also known as “Lil Hutch,” turned themselves in to authorities in Fayette County, where they are from.

Police have charged them with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The shooting incident happened at 2:15 Friday morning at Spiros near Sixth and Red River streets.

According to Spiros' manager Josh Cisneros, the music group the L.G. Allstarz, from La Grange, had been scheduled to perform Thursday night, but missed their show. He said the group arrived at the club at closing time and demanded to be let in.

According to Cisneros, the group was barred from the club.

Then, he said, the two suspects returned to their cars and came back to the nightclub armed.

Austin Police Department Officer David Socho recalled the scene.

Nightclub Shooting

News 8's Heidi Zhou shares an early morning report from the scene of the incident.

8 Injured

News 8’s Jenna Hiller shares a recap of the events and reaction from police.

“We heard a lot of loud pops, I assumed at first it was firecrackers, there were so many pops," he said. "It sounded close to Seventh and Red River … when I got up here, I was flagged down that there was a woman that was shot in the stomach. As I got up to her, there was a lot of chaos in front of club Spiros, and I realized there was two or three other people down, and while I was trying to tend to her, calling for EMS, I realized there were two more inside the club that were shot inside the doorway.”

Cisneros said he was present outside the club and saw what happened. He said about 75 customers were standing in the street when the shooters approached.

Cisneros said they were mostly shooting downward but randomly aiming at the crowd. He said the crowd panicked and ran in all directions. He said he saw two people run toward the club doors before realizing they were shot and watched them fall to the ground. In addition, Cisneros said he saw two people run toward the alleyway before they were hit and fell to the ground.

According to police, the woman who was shot in the stomach is in critical condition at Brackenridge Hospital.

The others have non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the gunmen left the scene in two different vehicles. The two did not turn themselves in until Friday afternoon.

Several witnesses came forward and are working with Austin police.

APD said the incident could have been worse.

"Because of the size of the gathering, and the number of shots that were fired, it was several, that no one got killed or no one got seriously critically injured, it's very fortunate," Lt. Gerardo Gonzalez said.

APD has responded to 172 calls for assistance at Spiros since the beginning of 2008.

Now the district attorney's office has opened a criminal investigation into the landlord at Spiros for nuisance abatement.

LaBaaron Demon Hutchison, also known as “Lil Hutch.”
"Based on the totality of this club's track record certainly with what happened last night, we are proceeding, working hand-in-hand with APD's nuisance abatement to address this problem," Assistant District Attorney David Laibovitz said.

TABC is also seeking administrative sanctions against Spiros and looking into whether the owners could have done anything to prevent the shooting.
